Swedish criminologist: The Malmö shooting was one of the worst in decades

On Monday, three people were shot dead near an internet cafe in central Malmö, in what has been described as an incident between criminal gangs. It is “one of the worst shootings in Sweden among criminal environments over the last 30 years,” according to criminologist Mikael Rying.

Talking to SVT News, criminologist Mikael Rying said that it is “extremely unusual that so many people are shot during the same incident.” He goes on to explain violent crime has risen exponentially in recent years.

The Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (BRÅ) statistics, as SVT explains, has found that deaths as a result of shootings in Sweden have risen some 247 percent since 2011, when 17 people died as a result of shootings, compared to 42 people in 2017.

In February, as The Rational Times reported, Peder Hyllengren, an expert at the Swedish Defence University, warned that extremist terrorist recruitment is thriving in some Swedish suburbs, where integration among immigrants has failed.
